Secrets, Lies, and Mysteries: Creating a Compelling Narrative with Carol Goodman (via Zoom)

July 10 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

What keeps the reader engaged? How does voice pull us into the fictive world? How can setting create tension and atmosphere? What makes a story one that we can’t put down? This is a class for fiction writers who want to learn how to use mystery and suspense—whether in the mystery genre or not—to create a compelling narrative. We look at the basic elements of storytelling—voice, characterization, setting, imagery, dialogue—and examine how each element can work to create conflict, tension, and suspense. Short outside readings and guided exercises illustrate issues of craft. Students’ work is critiqued in a supportive and constructive workshop environment. Six weeks on zoom. Plus one one-hour individual consultation available during or at the end of the session.

NB: This six-week class will be taught on Zoom (Wednesdays, July 10-August 14, 6-8 PM ET) and will be capped at 15 students. Registrants will receive the Zoom link to the email address they use to register. It will arrive immediately after registration so please check your spam folder if you do not receive it. It will also be sent the day before class as a reminder. Please review the course policies page before registering for any classes. Please email [email protected] with any questions.
