The full dates of the session are described in the course descriptions. You would need to scroll back to the start date if you needed to enroll for something already underway. But do let us know if you want to join something in midstream since we need the blessing of the instructor. Questions? Email us.

Taking the Temperature: Thermostatic Control in Our Poems with Martha Rhodes (via Zoom)

November 2 @ 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

$130.00
In this two hour discussion class, we will closely read poems through the lens of thermostatic control — we’ll especially look at the actual language of the poem, pretty much word by word, to see how the writer manages to fluctuate temperature or maintain it, and to what effect. A poem might be hot, indicating fear, anger, or even intense love. Or it may be cold, indicating distance, fear, anger, a clinical affect. Or it may even be thermostatically neutral. How does temperature, then, affect our poems? Why think about it? We’ll discuss poems by different writers throughout the afternoon.

NB: This class will be taught on Zoom (Saturday November 2, 12:30-2:30 PM ET) and will be capped at 20 students. Registrants will receive the Zoom link to the email address they use to register. It will arrive immediately after registration so please check your spam folder if you do not receive it. It will also be sent the day before class as a reminder. Please review the course policies page before registering for any classes. Please email [email protected] with any questions.

Martha Rhodes is the author of 5 poetry collections, most recently The Thin Wall (Univ of Pittsburgh Press), and teaches in the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. She is the publisher and executive editor of Four Way Books in New York City.
