Click the colored tabs below to show only specific options. Our workshops run as multi-session series or one-day “intensives.” Note, we list the multi-session courses on the first day they meet only. The full dates of the session are described in the course descriptions. You would need to scroll back to the start date if you needed to enroll for something already underway. Writing Poetry for Children, Teens, Adults: Commonalities/ Differences with Richard Michelson (via Zoom)

Great poetry is great poetry, whether aimed at children, teens or adults. with any luck we will experience all three phases of life. Yet some of our finest poets are unable to bridge the divide, while others write magnificently for different audiences. We will look at the work of some well established poets who are comfortable writing for all audience, and learn some of their secrets. This talk will be geared to those writers hoping to spread their wings, and broaden their audience.

NB: This class will be taught on Zoom (Sunday, October 6, 12:30-2:30 PM ET) and will be capped at 15 students. Registrants will receive the Zoom link to the email address they use to register. It will arrive immediately after registration so please check your spam folder if you do not receive it. It will also be sent the day before class as a reminder. All HVWC scholarship applications will be available on May 1 and will be due on May 15 for all summer/fall 2024 classes.

RICHARD MICHELSON’s most recent poetry collection is Sleeping as Fast as I Can (Slant Books, 2023). Previous collections include More Money than God (U of Pittsburgh Press), Battles and Lullabies (U of Illinois), Tap Dancing for the Relatives (U of Central Florida), and two fine-press collaborations, Masks, and Semblant with the artist Leonard Baskin’s Gehenna Press. Michelson’s children’s books have been named among the 10 Best of the Year by The New York Times, Publishers Weekly, and The New Yorker, and among the Best Dozen of the Decade by Amazon.com Michelson has received a National Jewish Book Award, two Sydney Taylor Gold Medals from the Association of Jewish Libraries, and two Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowships. His work was chosen to represent the Commonwealth at the Library of Congress National Book Festival. Other credits include a National Network of Teachers of the Year Social Justice Award, three Junior Library Guild Gold Medals, a Harlem Book Fest Phillis Wheatley Honor, a National Parenting Publication Gold Medal and an International Reading Association Teacher’s Choice Award. Michelson served two terms as Poet Laureate of Northampton, Massachusetts, where he hosts Northampton Poetry Radio and owns R. Michelson Galleries.
